I decided that I needed to start doing some speed-painting to loosen up. I get so caught up in detail that I often tend to lose the focus of a piece, and that's no good. These are the better ones from last week, 30min each on all save the last, which was ~1hr:

DDC - Final Sketch

This guy's pretty lost. He's spent hours upon hours, maybe even days crawling on his hands and knees through who knows how many shafts trying to find a way out. Though he might have been injured during his previous days wandering the dungeon, now the palms of his hands and knees to feet are torn, bloody, and probably infected from climbing through grime. His pants are shredded, his footwear mostly gone, and after an eternity of crawling it really, really, hurts to stand. Unfortunately, he finds himself in what might be the absolute lowest portion of the dungeon, which, though once cavernous, has since caved in many places. He pauses a moment to rest, fighting fatigue, delirium, and pain. Water drips down from the cracks above and his lantern sputters.

Anywho, lots of work to do on this yet, but this is what I'll be working toward the final with.

Dungeon Delve Challenge

I'm taking part in the Dungeon Delve Challenge over at WotC's Art Order blog. Subject: adventurer guy with a lantern is lost in a dungeon with little to no hope of escape. Emphasize hopelessness.

I ended up with three sketches for this guy. I'm torn between 2 and 3 - my brain likes 2, but my gut likes 3.

Regents

A couple of rough grayscale designs done for Bethany on last month's Ustream session. Just trying out various clothing designs for her Regents. One, if not all, will be taken to finish.

Tsaritartion/Lock World

Two things from last month's streaming session. A shot of the High Plains, and a quick study of something a Lock might wear. I'd like to develop these further.

Relk World

Just a couple of scribbled concepts for the Relk world. There's a Relk face, Kiliokeo (large predator), Rhuedon (small predator), and an Oorda, a migratory herbivore that gains and loses weight in extreme fashion in accordance with where they are in their migration cycle.

Cerberus

I've completely reoriented Cerberus. I did it again not too long ago, but the newer version needs more work so this is the previous version. Looking back at both, I may end up going more towards this instead of expanding it so much (I was hell bent on having a burning city in there, no pun intended).

I haven't had much time for personal art lately, but I did manage to get a start on a few things last month. I began working on the Cerberus image I posted earlier here, though I'm flopping between styles right now and I'm not sure which direction I want it to go in. I also briefly picked up a sketch of Merlin I did last year, but didn't get very far. And then last week my friend roped me into watching Criminal Minds so I did some doodling and came up with a Mandogisofish, where I was mulling over pill bugs, trilobites, and modern-day isopods (in particular, the ones that eat and replace the tongues of fish).

Battle above the Eye

The images on my website are pretty small, so here's a better view of Battle Above the Eye. The piece was started over half a year ago so there's a lot my old painting style going on here, but I'm fairly pleased with how it turned out (pending screen contrast, I haven't been able to match my cintiq with the PC monitor as of yet).

Looks like the Shadow Wraith and the 4rth Shield decided to merge, which ties up a loose end in the world quite nicely.

I'll probably clean this guy up when I get the chance and throw some color on him. A nice multi-tinted brown would look cool, I think.

Relk - General Anatomy

Creature Sculpt Test1

Just a quick test from last week. I had it in mind to do half skin and half muscle and bone, like one of the prehistoric displays in the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, but I think I've gotten enough out of this guy. I've never used Super Sculpy so this was a nice test. The thing baked really well, though, and I was both surprised and delighted.

I did not snap any images of the armature or body base, for this one or the one I'm working on now. The first few images are from figuring out the body, followed by the addition of the face, feet, and details. The last image is of the critter baked.

I ended up straying from the original sketch slightly - moreso at the addition of the skin patterning, which does not match the sketch aesthetic.

As far as learning to use the materials, the test was great! As far as keeping to the original sketch, that part was 50/50 - since it was for fun I didn't feel the need to duplicate it exactly. Accuracy will be a bit more important in the next one.

Yeah! Getting this thing here kick-started. A few critter sketches from a bit ago. It looks like I'm going to have to play with those fonts though, the blurriness is driving me nuts.
